Disasters are driving a mental health crisis

Exposure-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for children aims to reduce PTSD symptoms in children in 4–8 60 min sessions with possible parent support. Negative cognitions and PTSD symptoms significantly declined between pre- and post-treatment. We identified ten brief psychotherapeutic interventions, of which four were developed for children or adolescents.

Case studies

  • Launched in 2006, APHA’s Get Ready campaign helps Americans prepare themselves, their families and their communities for all hazards, including infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters and other emergencies.
  • The reasons for the lack of effectiveness could be that the treatment dose was too low or the assessment of outcomes at only 7 weeks post-intervention might not be enough time to observe significant changes in symptoms.
  • Disasters affected people in different ways over time, some reported increased PTSD and anxiety symptoms .
  • Some of our included studies showed a connection between PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms after the earthquake 37-40.
  • Information about resources such as data, tissue, model organisms and imaging resources to support the NIMH research community.

“This is not uncommon given the temporary nature of the program,” a state health department spokesperson said in an email. “More time would be great and more resources would be great,” he said, but “we’re not there to create a need that doesn’t exist. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, which ran the CCP in Houston after Harvey, said that the findings don’t include other forms of support beyond counseling. The unequal distribution of assistance she sees in Black neighborhoods in particular, from food to disaster loans, adds to the emotional toll for residents. In Herndon’s ZIP code, which ranked second on that FEMA-application list, some 4,700 people asked for aid. At the same time, about 341,000 people there applied for housing or property aid from FEMA.

Government, educational, and health care organizations are using various strategies to meet mental health needs in the United States, including telehealth policy changes, increased funding for certified community behavioral health clinics, expansion of health care provider capacity, and relaxation of education and training requirements (Box). Emergency funding at the national level to augment mental health facilities and service provision modalities, particularly telehealth services, continues to support the delivery of care. Past emergencies uncovered weaknesses in the ability of the US public health infrastructure to deploy an integrated, unified, and large-scale response to mental health crises.7-12 The evidence for long-term treatment of mental illness among HCWs after past disasters is sparse. Specifically, augmentation of public health emergency responses to address the unique mental health needs of HCWs will be imperative for preventing this population from disproportionate harm during and after future disasters. Identification of strengths and gaps in past US and international public health emergency responses can guide development of future activities to address postdisaster mental health needs.

In order to design, organize and implement post-disaster crisis-orientedservices, an integrated, interactive, flexible linkage system between themental health organization and emergency management agencies needs to be established. It is important to realize that while mental health professionals organizeto assist survivors, multiple activities are taking place within the governmental/publicsystem. Monitor responders and recovery workers for symptoms of behavioral health problems and provide early interventions. Train community members and responders in universal behavioral health interventions (e.g., psychological first aid, American Red Cross’s Coping in Today’s World).

Priority: Deliver Early Behavioral Health Interventions

Online Psychotherapy Tool (OPTT) Parenting teens during the coronavirus pandemic is a 9-week program to reduce mental health problems in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant anxiety reduction but not in depression was found post-training. Psychologists provide online and practical face-to-face training and psychological support to nursing staff. Three modules cover cognitive training, cognitive consolidation, and behavioral interventions. The interventions were mostly conducted online; only one intervention was designed in a hybrid format. The 27 studies or study protocols were from 16 countries; most were from America or Asia.

For that reason, our results may not represent the general experience of disaster survivors. And they’re deeply frustrated about the government’s preparedness for and response to disaster. About three-quarters of those who took the Public Integrity/CJI survey said the pandemic is compounding their previous disaster experience, from piling on more stress to further eroding their finances.
